Perempuan Komponis: Forum & Lab is a collective-association founded on the principle of solidarity among women and non-binary composers in Indonesia. Since 2021, PK has been committed to advocating for and facilitating the exchange of knowledge and inclusive musical thought across Indonesia, while serving as a conduit for diverse initiatives in contemporary music creation and exploration at local, translocal, and transnational levels. In 2024, PK served as an artistic partner and co-organizer of Pekan Komponis Indonesia (Indonesia Composers Week) with the Music Committee of the Jakarta Arts Council at Taman Ismail Marzuki. Four artists will represent the collective:
Gema Swaratyagita (co-founder) is a composer, performer, and music educator whose work often explores interdisciplinary arts, bridges traditional, poetry, body performance to experimental practices, and collaborative projects with cross-disciplinary artists. She has also begun creating works in performing arts for children’s audiences with Kentjan Ketjil and by founding Bumi Bunyi Creative Music Education, a creative music learning space for children. She is the founder of Laring Kolektif.
Dinar Rizkianti (Kunay) (co-founder) is a vocal artist and composer exploring the body-voice nexus through extended technique and improvisation. Her solo project Kumari integrates electronics and ambient soundscapes. As a lecturer at ISBI Bandung, she combines academic and artistic approaches to vocal experimentation. Both artists bring vital perspectives to this collaboration with Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra, blending Indonesian and Scottish experimental sound worlds.
Nadya Hatta is a pianist and composer based in Yogyakarta. She learned classical piano during her childhood but gradually became interested in exploring the piano’s sound with sound effects, transforming the piano into a versatile instrument capable of expressing a myriad of textures and tones. More recently, she has developed an interest in sound design. In addition to composing and playing in bands, she hones a solo practice, providing music composition for movies, art exhibitions, theater and dance performances.
Arum Dayu is a Bandung-based interdisciplinary artist and musician working across music, photography, video, performance, and sound. Her practice explores social and women’s issues, often focusing on gender equality in Indonesia, while celebrating women’s strengths and critically engaging with societal challenges. She has participated in exhibitions, workshops, and residencies both in Indonesia and abroad, and is active in the music scene with the bands Tetangga Pak Gesang and Syarikat Idola Remaja.
Other artists:
Debbie Armour is a traditional singer and artist, working across sound and performance. Broadly, her work is motivated by ideas of persistence, resonance and deep cultural roots. She is also a founder member of critically acclaimed contemporary acapella group Green Ribbons. Her work is multilingual, with releases in English, Scots, Gaelic and Welsh.
