GIOfest XIII - George Lewis & Tia Denora

Chicago-born trombonist George Lewis’ biography reads like a Who’s Who of free music of the past half century, working as he has with such luminaries as Count Basie, Roscoe Mitchell, Fred Anderson, Joelle Leandre, John Zorn, Steve Lacy and so many more.

At GIOFest XIII, George is in conversation with Tia Denora, who works as a music sociologist at the Universities of Exteter and Bergen. Tia’s work focuses on how music can be used to help with mental health, late life/end of life and everyday life. Her most recent book, Hope: ‘the dream we carry’ is forthcoming from Palgrave Macmillan in 2021. Tia is widely regarded as one of the most influential music sociologists in the world and, what’s more, has joined GIO in recent months as a full member of our online improvising group.
