The
Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra is a large ensemble of around twenty musicians
from diverse artistic origins such as free improvisation, experimental
musics, jazz, classical music, folk, performance (art), and pop. Since
its inaugural project in October 2002 the orchestra has established
a reputation, both locally and internationally, for innovative and critically
acclaimed improvised music. A slew of collaborations with world renowned
improvisers have helped expand the band's critical horizons. A key focus
for the ensemble is the exploration of improvisation in a large group
context. This ongoing research has employed various approaches such
as graphic notation, text scores, spatial and formal strategies, conduction
techniques, responses to film, conversation and above all listening.
